Tree of Heaven
(Chinese sumac, Paradise-tree, Copal-tree) Ailanthus altissima - This Chinese
native was introduced to the US from England in the early 1700's and has
become naturalized over most of the US. The tree prefers moist loamy
soils, but can easily adapt to a wide variety of conditions. So adaptable
is it, that it has been used to reclaim strip mines, where the soil is
nearly impossible. The leaves are 1-3ft. long and resemble a palm
tree. Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 20ft.
