European Alder (Common Alder, Black Alder)  Alnus glutinosa - Native to Europe and northern Africa.  Often grown as a multi-trunked tree; pyramidal in shape and good for wet sites and exposure to salt air.  The plant is fast growing and a good choice for a windbreak or hedge. They are often used a temporary tree cover while larger, slower growing species are becoming established, dying out as the larger tree shade them.   The bark is used to treat swellings and inflammations;  the leaves are astringent and have been used to treat certain cancers, including that of the throat, esophagus, tongue, duodenum and uterus.  Stems were used as toothbrushes.  Dyes are obtained from the bark (rusty red), and the leaves (buckskin).  Hardy to -40F (-40C); height: 50ft.

Japanese Alder - Alnus japonica -   Deciduous tree with a slender upright habit and narrow oval leaves.  An excellent choice for shade or accent, it is a tough tolerant tree with very few problems.  Bark from the tree has been used to treat tumors and is used to make a dye.  The wood is finely grained and is used to produce furniture.  The plant prefers a rather heavy soil and does very well in clays and is a nitrogen-fixing species.  Hardy to -20F (-28.8C);  height: 30ft.
