Butterfly Bush, Buddleja, Summer Lilac, Orangeye Butterfly Bush

Buddleias have become one of the most popular shrubs for the garden and make wonderful specimen plants or hedges.  One of the best shrubs for attracting butterflies, these beautiful specimens originated in China.  They have long willow-like leaves, usually grey-green in color with a white underside.  The blooms are carried in long pannicles , some up to 12in. in length.  Most are wonderfully sweet smelling, blooming profusely through mid to late summer until frost.  They are hardy and, even if winter freezes them back to the ground, they will emerge from new shoots and reach a height of 6-8ft. in one season.  In areas where winter temperatures fall between -10F (-23.3C) and -20F (-28.8C), best results are achieved by mulching the base of the plant.  In warmer climates where little freezing takes place, they can grow into massive shrubs of 15ft. tall by 8ft. wide.  Plant them in full sun in well drained soil.
