Caesalpinia pulcherrima Mexican Bird of Paradise Barbados Pride plant seeds
Mexican Bird of Paradise (Pride of Barbados, Red Bird of Paradise, Dwarf Poinciana, krere, Barbados Flower, Tabaquin) - Caesalpinia pulcherra or Poinciana pulcherrima -  Small perennial evergreen shrub with bowl-shaped red blooms growing at the end of prickly branches.  Native to the West Indies, it's leaves have been used as a purgative and as a treatment for kidney stones, malaria and bronchitis.  It is a lovely specimen and is often used to attract and to feed butterflies.  It prefers a slightly alkaline well-drained soil in full sun and can be grown in cooler climates as an annual plant.  Hardy to 20F (-1.2C); height: 20ft.

Bird of Paradise Bush (Yellow Bird of Paradise, Desert Bird of Paradise,Barba de Chivo, Mal de Ojo) - Caesalpinia gilliesii -  Large shrub or small tree with ferny leaves (resembling an albizzia)  and solid yellow flowers with long red stamens (4-5in.), blooming mainly in the spring, then sporadically throughout the season.  Blooms are followed by fuzzy fruits which remain until picked (NOTE: SEEDS ARE TOXIC).  Showy specimen well adapted to dry areas.  Hardy to 10F (-12.2F); height: 10ft.
