Cyclamen
(Plant heights are given at maturity)

Hardy Cyclamens are herbaceous plants used primarily as a container or bedding plant. Very ornamental, the plants have ovate leaves and large colorful blooms. They prefer rich, slightly rocky, well drained soil in a location with full or dappled shade. They make lovely border or specimen plants are provide a great show in containers in shade locations.

Propagation is done by digging and separating tubers in the spring or by sowing seeds. Seeds should be sown in pots, trays or a bed prepared with a soiless seed starting medium (1 part sphagnum peat moss to 1 part sand is fine). Soak the seeds for 24 hours prior to planting. Sow the seed and cover lightly. Maintain temperature at about 60F and keep the medium moist, but not soggy. The medium should be shaded. When seedlings reach 2 inches in height, transplant to larger containers or, if outdoor temperatures remain above 55F, you may set the transplants in an outdoor prepared area. Seeds planted in spring will bloom the following spring.
