   European Larch (Gemeine Lärche; Mélèze d'Europe)  Larix decidua - Large pyramidal deciduous tree native to Europe with drooping branches covered in soft green needle-like leaves.  Fall foliage is yellow; small cone-like blooms in spring.  Prefers a location with well drained soil in full sun.  Tolerates wet sites.  A long lived tree, of which the oldest known specimen is 986 years old.  This species is used extensively in Europe as a timber tree. Hardy to -40F (-40C); height: 75ft.

Japanese Larch - Larix leptolepis -  A pretty tree with deciduous needles with a  pyramidal growth habit and good color - soft green in the spring and yellow in the autumn.  Often considered the most ornamental of the larches, this variety grows quickly and bears small seeds produced in cones.  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C);  height: 60ft.
