NECTARINE
(Plant heights are given at maturity)
nectarines
Nectarines are smooth skinned peaches and are grown like a peach, in a location with sloping well drained land, to permit prime air flow.  They prefer a light slightly sandy well drained soil that permits deep root formation, but will adapt to many different soil types.  Heavy clay soils with poor drainage or soils with hard subsoil will cause short-lived trees.  Also, try to avoid planting in the same location in which a tree has just been removed.  This may cause poor growth of the new tree.  Most nectarines are grown on seedling stock, but some are grown as grafts.
Best planting time in cooler climates is in the early spring, while the trees are dormant and in warmer ones in the late fall or early winter.  Optimum spacing of trees is 20ft.  For the sweetest fruits, it is best to pick the fruits after they have fully ripened on the tree.  For larger fruit, you may want to thin out the immature fruits (the rule is 1 fruit per 30-50 leaves) after the 'June Drop', when the tree naturally drops some of the smaller fruit.
Pruning should be done in late winter in colder climates and in warmer ones at any time the tree is dormant.
Nectarines are classified as 'Freestone' (the fruits receeds slightly from the seed allowing easy removal) or 'Semi-freestone' (the fruit meets the seed, but separates fairly easily).
Our trees have a trunk diameter of approximately 1/2 to 5/8 inch and will reach approximately 20ft.in height at maturity. All are hardy to -20F (-28.8C) - USDA Zone 5 - and most require at least two trees for proper pollination (except where indicated in the description).   They are chosen for their strength and hardiness and, with proper planting and maintenance, will provide many years of delicious fruit in a commercial or home orchard.
