pawpaw  Paw paw - Asimina triloba - Native American species valued for its yellow green 3-5 inch edible fruits, which taste like an over-ripe banana.  Spring blooms are lurid purple and about 2in. across.  The foliage is about 5 inches long and oval in shape and the tree itself has a pyramidal growth habit.  Two or more trees are necessary for fruit production.  Fruits have been used as a laxative, the leaves to treat boils and ulcers, and fiber from the bark is used to produce rope.  The seeds are toxic and are sometimes ground into a powder used to treat head lice.  The fruits may cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals.  A tough specimen, the plants are tolerant to soil types and conditions, are easy to grow from seed, but do not transplant well.  Hardy to -20F (-28.8C); height: 35ft.
