  Carolina Buckthorn (Indian Cherry)  Rhamnus caroliniana -  Small tree with slender spreading branches and glossy ovate leaves.  Red berries appear in drupes in the fall and ripen to a dark purple-black.  Fall foliage is yellow.  It prefers a slightly alkaline soil in partial shade beneath other trees, although it can do very well in full sun.  Hardy to -20F (-28.8C);  height: 30ft.

  Common Buckthorn - Rhamnus cathartica - Native to Asia and Europe, this shrub has become naturalized over much of the northern US.  The shrub is deciduous with small rounded glossy leaves and greenish yellow blooms in the spring which produce drupes of black berries in the fall.   It  is a fast grower and can become invasive if not maintained.  Hardy to -40F (-40C); height: 25ft.
