Bearberry - Arcostaphylos uva-ursi (Uva-ursi, Ayiuzumu, Bear's
Grape, Berendruif, Coralillo, Kinnikinick) Medium sized evergreen
shrub with small white blooms in the spring that develop into pink berries.
The new leaves are made into a tea used to treat bladder and kidney complaints,
into a mouthwash, or into a salve used to treat skin problems and are considered
highly antibiotic. The berries are used to make drinks or jellies
or eaten raw or dried. A dye can be obtained from the leaves or berries.
The plant itself is low growing and makes a good ground cover or erosion
control. It prefers a light sandy soil that is well drained and can
do very well in poor soils. It is not particular as to quantity of
sunlight and does well in shade, semi-shade or full sun. Hardy to -30F
(-34.4C); height: 3ft.

Greenleaf Manzanita - Arctostaphylos patula -Evergreen shrub with small white blooms maturing into small berries. Fruits taste rather like green apples and are used in making cakes, jellies and juice. Seeds are ground and used in soups. The leaves are used to make poutices to treat burns and cuts or to make a yellow dye. The plant prefers a light slightly acidic sandy soil in either shade, semi-shade or full sun and is low growing, making an excellent ground cover or reclamation plant. Hardy to -10F (-23.3C); height: 3ft.
