SOLIDAGO

(Plant heights are given at maturity)

Canadian Goldenrod - Solidago canadensis - Perennial - Native American plant with plumes of golden yellow blooms in late summer until frost.  Tough and hardy, the plant can survive almost anywhere, though it is happiest in well drained moist soil.   It attracts butterflies, ladybugs and lacewings, but has an abundance of pollen, which may be a problem to allergy sufferers.  It is edible, with the leaves and stems being cooked as a green or used to make tea, and the seeds ground and used as a thickener.  Goldenrod root is said to be beneficial to burns and cuts, containing antiseptic and astringent properties.  The blooms have been used to treat sore throat, fever, kidney problems and snakebite.  Full sun or partial shade;  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 28in.
