TIPS:  MAKE YOUR OWN ESSENTIAL OIL EXTRACTS
Essential oils are fairly expensive, but may be extracted at home from many herbs into usable forms with minimal effort. This method can be used with such herbs as patchouli, lavender, calendula and various mints. You should start with cut herbs and an oil with a long shelf life such as olive or macadamia. You will need the following: crock pot or double boiler, 16oz of oil, 3/4 c of herbs, cheesecloth or a 12" square piece of unbleached muslin fabric, and a sealable jar (a canning jar will be fine).

Place the oil and herbs into a crock pot or double boiler and bring the temperature up to about 130F VERY SLOWLY. Simmer for 1 hour, then cool to room temperature. Repeat the heating and cool down to luke warm. Strain the oil through several layers of cheesecloth or a piece of muslin into a bowl or directly into a storage jar. Squeeze the last of the drained herbs to make sure to get all of the oil.

You can use your essential oils as needed.
